Coffee Grounds, Amino Acids, Probiotics, Sea Kelp …oh my.

What do these components have to do with growing a healthy lawn? A lot! At Canopy, we take a unique approach to lawn care.  We believe that growing a healthy lawn starts in the soil – creating a healthy environment for turf to grow. And we do this by using materials that you’ve actually heard of, like coffee grounds, amino acids, probiotics, sea kelp, and more.  These all play a key role in delivering our desired results.  Our agronomists have worked for years to develop our proprietary lawn care program, as the traditional methods and products do not meet our objectives and go against Mother Nature, rather than following it.  So, let’s dive into each of these fun and fascinating components of our Lawn Care Program.

Coffee Grounds

Do you enjoy a cup of coffee to get your day going? Well, guess what, your lawn enjoys the same thing. Coffee grounds are an active carbon-based food source that feed the soil and the related microbiome.  Keeping these beneficial bacteria, fungi, and other soil biology happy, we’re efficiently maximizing nutrient use in the soil biome.  There’s also organic nitrogen and sulfur in these grounds that feed your lawn. Traditional programs do not use this component in their fertilizers – we’re the only ones!

Amino Acids

Amino acids, another guardian of the grass, also play a role in your lawn’s growth and development. Our core materials contain 20 Plant essential L-Amino acids that aid the plant during times of stress, especially drought.  Derived from organic compounds found in plant seeds, amino acids contain nutrients that are easily identified and absorbed by the grass plants - they too are chelators. These identifiable nutrients help your lawn grow strong healthy roots and shoots.  Like humans, plants need amino acids to be happy and healthy too!

Probiotics (Core Program)

Also called a soil microorganism, these little guys are responsible for our continued effort to maximize and harness the soil’s ability to keep your lawn healthy.  They live in the soil and around the plant’s roots, called the Rhizosphere.  We apply safe, beneficial bacteria, fungi and yeasts at the proper times of the growing season that help improve the lawn’s ability to absorb nutrients and increase their overall populations in the soil. They’re also serve as a plant protector from diseases and pathogens that affect your lawn during certain times of the season.

Sea Kelp Extract

Sea kelp, specifically Ascophyllum nodosum, is proven to strengthen and build a robust lawn that can withstand environmental stressors like heat, humidity, high salinity, and disease pressure.  While other lawns are struggling during these stressful times, those under our lawn care program are developing new roots, growing and enjoying a healthy lifestyle!

Fulvic Acid

Fulvic acids are very small materials and can enter the plant through the roots or cell walls. Fulvic acids help the plant roots access the nutrients on the soil colloid, or leaf blade to the plant. Think of fulvic acid as a piece of Velcro that allows the nutrients to latch onto and makes for a more efficient and effective nutrient uptake.  In the soil, fulvic acid also allows for nutrients to stay in their organic form, which are plant available, a process called chelation .  Phosphorus and Iron are two nutrients that can be easily soil bound and become inorganic, thus not available to the plant.  Fun fact – fulvic acid has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is a supplement many human stake today!

Humic Acid

Humic acids are larger than fulvic acids and help the soil hold nutrients.  These acids are responsible for stimulating the soil's beneficial microbiology, serving as a shuttle for plant uptake of nutrients and chemistries, increasing soil carbon content and increasing the soil's water holding capacity. In a nutshell, humic acids are responsible for nutrient and water retention in the soil, specifically around the plants root zone. Fun fact – in the human body, fulvic acids  been shown to aid in digestion and utilization of food and help improve overall gut health.

Our Core Lawn Care Program Materials:

o Oilseed Extract – a renewable source of plant nutrition derived from Mother Nature

 o Safe and Clean –

o  Low salt index fertilizers that help reduce the risk of plant damage, and significantly reduce the amount of salt in the soilbiome, which causes beneficial biology to die, with repeated exposure

o  Liquid fertilizer materials are processed in a zero-waste facility

o  Granular fertilizer components are removed from the waste stream and repurposed as beneficial nutrients

o  Fertilizers that are heavy metal free and pathogen free

o  Low pH formulations with high levels of organic soluble Carbon

o Soluble Carbon allows for root growth, along with increased soil microbial diversity

o No Fillers: every component included in each bag of fertilizer and each liquid formulation serves a purpose and is beneficial to soil and plant health

o  With every application, we're continually improving the soil and plant health by eliminating the need for traditional, synthetic materials

Our number one job and the reason you’ve hired us is to grow the happiest and healthiest lawns.  We do this in our proprietary lawn care program by utilizing the above materials, with the endgame being very healthy roots. Roots are where long-term atmospheric carbon is stored (via photosynthesis).  This process is calledCarbon Sequestration over time the soil's organic matter increases, thus improving your soil's health.  Improved soil health leads to healthier soil biology/microbes while promoting increased water and nutrient availability – the way Mother Nature intended. The last two points allow us to utilize our proprietary cleaner fertilizers because we have fed and developed the healthy soil biome, which is able to utilize these fertilizers and water more efficiently.
