4 Ways To Decorate A Pumpkin Without Carving

Posted by Canopy on October 5th, 2017

Pumpkin time is here! Will you be decorating pumpkins this year? Canopy has 4 clever ways that you can decorate pumpkins without carving them. These fun and festive pumpkin ideas will add a little Halloween spirit to your home all month long.

Sharpie Pumpkins®

Do you have any Sharpie pens® laying around? We bet you do! These handy household staples are also incredibly useful for decorating your pumpkins!

For our pumpkin, we decided to use traditional Halloween colors; choosing a black Sharpie® pen on an orange pumpkin. We hand-lettered “Welcome Fall” on the face of our pumpkin. The perfect message to usher in the season and welcome friends and neighbors into the home. 4 Ways To Decorate A Pumpkin Without Carving

Feel free to get creative here! You could also choose multi-color pens on a white or faux pumpkin to create a bold design. This is also a great pumpkin craft for children. If you are concerned about little hands using permanent markers, you can also offer them a washable variety.

Painted Pumpkins

Are brush strokes more your thing? Pumpkins are easy and fun to paint. We used basic acrylic paints on a white pumpkin. Our design was created freehand, but you could certainly stencil your pumpkins or trace a design if you prefer.

Halloween is a fun time for crazy patterns and bold colors. We used black paint as a bold contrast to our white pumpkin. Each section received its own design, resulting in a unique pattern all the way around the pumpkin. Due to the naturally smooth texture of the pumpkin, you may need to apply a second coat in order to get an even color.

Glitter Pumpkins

If you really want to jazz things up, try a glitter pumpkin! Glitter pumpkins are a unique and fun way to add a little sparkle to the Halloween season. This project can get a little messy, but it is a lot of fun to make. For easy cleanup, just lay out some newspaper or craft paper to catch any loose glitter.

For our glitter pumpkin, we used quick drying craft glue, fall-colored glitter and a variety of multi-color sequins. We let our glue drip down the pumpkin in a natural pattern, but you could also use the glue to create shapes or designs for your glitter. We then decorated the pumpkin stem with the sequins and let them sprinkle down the sides. Once dry, simply shake the excess glitter off or brush it away with a dry paintbrush.

Decoupage Pumpkins

Decoupaging pumpkins may look tricky, but it is actually quite quick and easy! You could really get creative here. Just about any material can be decoupaged.

We chose to decorate our decoupage pumpkins with festive fall leaves. We selected some fabric leaves found at a craft store. The leaves were a bit thick and ended up taking quite a bit of decoupage medium to adhere to the pumpkin, but stayed in place nicely upon drying.

Decoupage medium can be found at your local craft store. Select the medium that is designed for the type of material you plan to adhere. A fine brush works best, but you can also use a foam applicator.

Start by applying decoupage medium to the area of the pumpkin that you plan to cover up. Next, apply a heavy coat of the medium to the leaves or material you plan to apply. Press the material onto the pumpkin. This can be a little messy, but it is important to press the material on and then apply another coat or two of medium to ensure that it sticks. The medium will wash off your hands easily with soap and water.

It may look like there is too much glue, but the medium dries clear overnight. In the morning, you will have a lovely decoupage pumpkin to display!
