How to Water Your Lawn for Best Results

How to Water Your Lawn for Best Results

July is just around the corner and so is the heat! What does this mean for your lawn? Lots of water. If you do not have an irrigation system installed, this could take a little work, but with these tips you’ll be well on your way to a flourishing lawn.

Top 3 Tips to Remember:

Water in the morning

Water 20 minutes per area on average

Make sure your lawn receives at least 1 inch of water per week

Water in the Morning

You want to make sure you water in the morning so the grass has time to soak up the water throughout the day and in the sunlight. If you have cool season grass like fescue, watering in the evening means your lawn could stay too wet for too long and will likely develop disease and fungus from moisture and high temperatures.

Water Twenty Minutes Per Area

Be sure to water each area of your lawn for about 20 minutes. For best results, water deeply 2-3 times a week versus a little bit everyday. You’ll want to be sure to water sunnier areas more, as well as areas that are on a slope as more water will run off than what gets absorbed on flat ground.

Water at least One Inch Per Week

How do you know if you’ve watered enough? Consider getting a timer for your water spigots and set them on a regular schedule of watering. A less formal way to see if you’ve watered enough is to push a 6 inch screwdriver into your lawn. If you’re not able to push the screwdriver all the way down, you are not watering enough!

Last but not least, be sure to regularly check for wilting of grass blades, hard soil, and dry soil in order to maintain a properly hydrated lawn all summer long.
