How effective are mosquito control services?

First off, let’s review what we know about mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are a group of a species of small insects that are a type of fly (order Diptera). Within that order they make up the family Culicidae. The word “mosquito” is Spanish for “little fly”. Mosquitoes have wings, three pairs of long hair-like legs, feathery antennae, and an elongated mouth.

And pretty much everyone on the planet hates them.

Enter in mosquito control- where pest control and lawn care companies have developed products and services to protect your summer skin from the welts brought on by these tiny pests.

Typical mosquito control services use EPA approved insecticides like pyrethrins, derived from chrysanthemum flowers; and pyrethroids, synthetic chemicals that mimic pyrethrins. Here at Canopy we use the chemical Bifetherin, which is in the pyrethroid class. We, and most lawn and pest services, apply the insecticide via a backpack blower- targeting the underside of leaves and other ground cover where mosquitos like to hang out. The spray kills mosquitos that it comes into contact with and leaves a protective barrier that will help to repel future mosquitos for up to three weeks.

Is it safe?

We recommend that your children and pets stay inside during spraying and for at least 30 minutes after spraying is complete. This treatment is toxic to bees as well, so we avoid flowers and other pollinator hang outs.

Is it effective?

That’s the million dollar question- and it depends on a few factors. In and of itself, mosquito control is an effective deterrent when properly applied by a trained professional. If you have standing water on or near your property in the form of ponds, puddles, bird baths, and the like then mosquitos will have a more friendly breeding habitat and still show up for your cook out. Environmental factors also play a large role in the presence of mosquitos on your property. In 2018 Hurricane Florence brought a surge in the mosquito population in the state.

But overall mosquito control is a very effective service and will greatly reduce the presence of mosquitos on your property, allowing you to enjoy your summer.

Mosquito control is one of Canopy’s most popular service offerings and with good reason. This beneficial service is both cost-effective and guaranteed to work when it comes to drastically reducing mosquito activity in your yard.

What Happens During A Canopy Mosquito Control Visit?

Before your mosquito treatment, you will receive a text or email notification from Canopy letting you know when to expect us. During your mosquito control service visit, your Canopy Pro will arrive and scout the property. During scouting, the Pro will walk the property looking signs of potential mosquito habitats. This can include any areas of standing water or trees and shrubs that are conducive to breeding mosquito habitats. If your home landscape features such items as kiddie pools or bird baths, your Canopy Pro may offer recommendations to avoid leaving standing water on your property or dumping and refreshing the water often. Mosquitoes love to lay their eggs in water!

One of the things that makes mosquito control from Canopy Lawn Care such a popular service is our customer guarantee. If you see mosquitos on your property in between service visits, we will come back out and retreat for you. The presence of mosquitoes following mosquito spraying does not mean that the treatment was ineffective. Keep in mind that like birds or other insects and animals, mosquitoes travel from place to place. If your neighbors are not treating their property for mosquitoes, there is always a chance they will show up at your house. Overall, mosquito control is extremely effective at keeping mosquitoes at bay for 21 days.

Before you purchase a mosquito control service, check with your local government to see if they already spray your area, you may not need to buy it yourself! If they do and you still have problems then give us a call, we’d love to help you enjoy your summer a little more this year.
